What is Makers Alley?

Makers Alley is a design+build marketplace for custom home goods. We want to make custom more accessible and fun for every one!

We started Makers Alley in the quest find the perfect reclaimed dining table for a tiny space. Retail stores only sell products in a few sizes, while finding a maker to design & build a fully custom piece is inefficient, opaque and intimidating.

Let’s bring the relationship between maker and user closer together through transparency in design, price, and customization options.

How do I buy something on Makers Alley?

Every product on Makers Alley is made-to-order. There are two ways to shop:

  1. Inspired Designs. Browse our makers' designs. When you find one that you like, you can initiate the conversation with the maker to discuss ways to tailor the design to you.

  2. Maker Matchmaker. If you don't see a design that you like on our site, we can still help! We have a network of hundreds of makers. Just tell us what you are looking for and let them come to you.

Who are the makers on Makers Alley?

We seek out talented artisans, designers, woodworkers, metalworkers, and upholsterers who design and build awesome, unique products for the home.

Our makers tend to be professionals at what they do with a creative point of view.

What if I don't like the end product?

We hear you: buying custom can be intimidating. We once felt the same way, too. That's why we guarantee that you will be happy with your experience for up to $5000.

When will I receive my product?

When you accept a maker's proposal for a product, you will agree on delivery date and method. It depends on the work involved, so be sure to ask!

How do I sell my designs and products on Makers Alley?

  1. Register as a Maker: Sign Up
  2. Upload your designs/products.

You store is up and running!

A client will initiate a conversation with you on a design. Once you have agreed on the customizations and price, you will send a proposal that the client can accept and check out from our shopping cart.

What types of designs and products can I sell on your site?

Currently we are focused on made-to-order home furnishing and decor items such as tables, lighting, kitchen goods, etc. Since the designs are made-to-order, clients have an opportunity to discuss with you possible customization options before purchasing.

We reserve the right to take down any designs that do not fit our focus or quality standards.

How much does it cost?

Makers Alley is always free to list and a flat 10% 5% transaction fee of the product price to the buyer and the maker. If the product price is $1000, the maker will pay $50 and the buyer will pay $50. This fee includes credit card processing fees.

When will I get paid?

We receive full payment from the customer before you start building. Our payment schedule is as follows:

  • For designs less than $500 per unit, we initiate the payment the next business day, minus our transaction fee.

  • For designs more than $500 per unit, we initiate payment of 50% of the price the next business day, and the other 50% on delivery of the product. Since we receive full payment from the client upfront, rest assured you will get paid for your work when you finish the project.

You can receive payments through ACH transfer, Paypal, or Check. Keep in mind there is processing time after we initiate payment depending on the method of receipt. ACH transfers and checks by mail can take any where from 1 to 5 days to reach your address or bank account.
